The young man who stabbed a Muslim taxi driver in Manhattan was indicted on Monday on charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault as hate crimes, according to The New York Times. Michael Enright, 21, a film student, slashed Ahmed H. Sharif, 44, last week with a knife while riding in his taxi.
Sharif said that Enright first made small talk with him, but the mood changed after Sharif told Enright he was Muslim. According to The New York Times, Enright first responded to this information with an Arabic greeting, then silence. Then he said, "This is the checkpoint" and "I have to bring you down." Enright then slashed Sharif in the throat, face and arms.
